I was not sure if I needed the external battery and I am glad I went with it. It works great with the U3000.

Just purchased the Ivolt Xtra external battery pack, U3000 pro front and rear dashcam, and LTE module, hardwire installation only getting 17 hours, before the dashcam goes into operating in energy saving mode.
Each device cut the time by 10 hours.

From my experience using the thinkware U3000 Pro, LTE Module and Ivolt Xtra external battery pack together I only received between 15 to 17 hours tops, before you are not able to view any images, starts [Oprating on energy saving mode?

Bought this as part of the U3000 bundle in June 2023 (Order #XXXXX28). Installed exactly per Thinkware’s instructions: hardwired to the fuse box, 20-amp fuse (appropriate for the 13A max rated input), connected to a healthy AGM battery in a truck with no electrical issues. No jump starts, no aftermarket chargers, no modifications.
The unit failed internally during normal operation. When I opened it up, two of the power-stage MOSFETs on the board had ruptured and burned through their packaging, and the adjacent inductor was severely scorched. The PCB is carbonized.
The thermal event was hot enough to scorch the carpet of my vehicle at the installation location. Nobody was hurt, but if this had happened in an attached garage or during summer heat, or if the unit had been buried under upholstery, the outcome could have been much worse.
The protection circuitry that Thinkware markets as the safety backstop for this product (the PCM, the 80°C thermal cutoff) is exactly what failed and exactly what produced the heat. That’s the part shoppers should pay attention to before buying.
I’ve filed an incident report with the CPSC at SaferProducts.gov and have a formal claim in to Thinkware. I’m a long-time Thinkware customer with multiple cameras across my vehicles and did not write this review lightly.
If you’re considering this product, at minimum install it somewhere accessible — not buried under carpet or upholstery — so a thermal event has a chance of being noticed before it propagates.
