I bought the Thinkware Snap-G to take video of simple family events like birthdays, holidays, a day at the pool, a day at the beach, etc., where extreme zooming is not required. I own gimbals for my Nikon full-frame and DX DLSR’s, as well as a gimbal for my smartphone. I also own a great camcorder for the times I need a long zoom such as grandkids sporting events. I do not always need the quality nor size of the DLSR rigs, and using a smartphone with a gimbal at public events drains the battery while making calling and texting difficult. Sometimes the professional looking camcorder is intimidating to subjects in public. The Snap-G is a small form-factor, easy to use video solution and is designed specifically with an integrated gimbal. As with photography, were accessories such as lenses, flash (auxiliary lighting), filters, etc., make photos stand out, video also requires accessories, so I bought a cold-shoe arm which screws into the tripod socket of the Snap-G allowing me to attach rechargeable lights or corded microphones).
Pros:
-Large 2 inch screen.
-MicroSD card and charging port are covered (unlike some other brands)
-Stand alone video recording which does not require a smartphone.
-Several “fun” modes allow for time-lapse video (great for approaching storm clouds) and the fast paced “walking the street” mode.
-Up to 60FPS recording, however, facial or object tracking only work up to 30FPM (wasted a lot of time trying to figure out why auto-tracking was not working,,,,found out it does not work at 60FPS).
-Replaceable batteries allows the user to carry spares.
Cons:
-The lens is a bit too wide-angle which creates distortion, mostly disappears when the zoom is set to 1.0 or higher (can take care of it in post-processing, would be nice if the 1.0 could be set as the default startup position)
–3.5mm audio jack is a bit too close to the base of the screen, affecting mic selection choices.
